Let's face it... reality television sucks. Plain and simple. Most of these so-called "reality" shows do little more than provide mind-numbing "entertainment" by bringing out the worst in some people and putting it on display for all to see. Granted, I'm sure it's not entirely too difficult to bring that out in some of these douchebags, but still... And sadly, the public just eats it up... would there really be a new reality show born every 5 minutes if there wasn't a market for it? True, some of these train wrecks have a thankfully short shelf life, but every time one gets flushed down the crapper, something new and even worse rises up from the cesspool of the television network boardrooms to take its place.

I happened to catch a commercial for the newest piece of trash being brought to us, the ad proudly states, by the creators of The Real Housewives of... (fill in the city) and is called NYC Prep. It seems that this newest little slice of "reality" television ambrosia is centered around 6 kids between the ages of 15 and 18 living on the Upper East Side in New York who attend some ritzy private schools... so obviously these kids all come from some pretty wealthy families. In just the clips I saw, these kids... wow... arrogant, self-absorbed, attitudes of total entitlement and not a one of them seemed like a decent human being. I'm sure some people would say that they're just kids... and that's true. However, I would submit that living these lives of pampered leisure, having everything handed to them (literally) on a silver platter and never having to take responsibility for their actions is distorting their view of reality, of life and of people and that if they're acting this way in their mid to late teens, without any sort of reality check, their behavior isn't likely to change. And it's pretty unlikely that parents who act the exact same way as these little monsters (after all, the kids had to learn it somewhere) are going to provide that reality check.

Don't take my word for it however... take a peek and judge for yourself... below the cut is a clip of NYC Prep that I personally think is pretty vomit-worthy, but I leave it to you fine folks to make up your own minds.

I don't know... maybe this piece of trash isn't any more objectionable than the rest of the trash out there that passes for "entertainment" these days. I just find that reality television has become a race to the bottom with every show seeming intent on out-sleazing the others. For whatever reason, I find the fact that these kids walk around, behaving like the characters in that movie Cruel Intentions and think that it is not just normal, but okay to be infinitely more disturbing than say a group of wealthy, catty women arguing over whose husband makes more money or what salon they should go get their hair done in. Worst of all however, is that this garbage is being "glamorized" and "glorified" on television... tell me there aren't kids that will be watching this crap, think it's "cool" and do their best to emulate it. To have these spoiled little kids talking about sex and drugs being normal and something that "everybody" does at their school is absolutely disgusting... not to mention the horrific message it sends out to those kids that are undoubtedly going to worship this show and the spoiled little kids that populate it.

Granted, there are some shows out there like Intervention or The Biggest Loser that are doing their best to promote a positive message by shining a bright light on real social problems... but those seem to be few and far between. Most reality shows seem to be of the Real Housewives or the NYC Prep variety that are little more than a glorification of absolutely hideous and boorish behavior and do little more than show the worst sides of these people. Or even worse, you have a show like that John and Kate Plus Eight show where viewers witnessed the implosion of somebody's marriage and family life... more than 10 million apparently tuned in for the latest episode after weeks of media coverage about somebody's infidelity or some other such scandal or whatever. Honestly, I've never seen it and I don't particularly care to.

What is our obsession with reality television? Obviously, a ton of people love reality television or it would simply go away. What compels somebody to watch some of these things where the worst in people is on display or a relationship grows more and more strained every week until they hit the breaking point? Deep down, are we all just a bunch of Peeping Tom's that thrill on getting an "inside look" at somebody else's life? Do we just enjoy a little bit of schadenfreude now and again?

I don't know... I really, really don't. So how about you fine folks? Who out there watches "reality" television? If you do, which shows do you watch? And if you don't mind my asking, what keeps you tuning in week after week?

I'd love to hear any and all input on the subject of "reality" television...

ps, i watched rock of love sometimes when i had cable at school, just because it was so ridiculously over the top trashy. and i watched some of the i'm a celebrity get me out of here shows 'cause i wanted to see what heidi and spencer would do. but i don't actively watch reality shows.

My sister loves reality television... about all I can do when I cruise through the living room is shake my head when she's watching Train-Wreck TV.
29th-Jun-2009 04:16 am (UTC)
Seriously sad. lol...

I watch a lot of shows on HGTV, is that reality television? Stuff like a realtor hosting a show where she helps new homeowners find and buy their first home, and shows that track renovations, etc...I like them because they are process-oriented and it's neat to see the changes that take place, and to see other houses.
29th-Jun-2009 04:18 am (UTC)
I don't think those are necessarily the sort of "reality TV" I'm talking about here... Shows like the ones you're talking about are sort of educational... it's not all about trash and titillation. I think there's a huge difference.
29th-Jun-2009 12:01 pm (UTC)
hm. Animal Cops?

stuff like Wildest Police Chases is kinda funny sometimes...
30th-Jun-2009 05:27 am (UTC)
I just wanted to mention... after beating up a bit on your boys tonight, my Halos are now 2 1/2 games ahead of ya'll. ;-)
30th-Jun-2009 02:59 pm (UTC)
I know.

*glower*

Get used to looking up at my boys in the standings, baby. :-p
25th-Jun-2009 04:06 pm (UTC)
It's bread and circuses, baby. Distract the masses from what's really going on and you can get away with murder.
29th-Jun-2009 04:19 am (UTC)
Indeed it is. I think it's sad that more people are concerned with what's going on with John and Kate than in the world around them.
25th-Jun-2009 05:35 pm (UTC)
I used to watch Jon and Kate, I stopped because watching their marriage implode was too painful.

I do watch Deadliest Catch though...as far as reality shows go, that's good stuff. Honest, hard working guys, dealing with dangerous conditions, and there is no catty behavior there. Well,. except between greenhorns on occasion. LOL
29th-Jun-2009 04:20 am (UTC)
I've watched and enjoyed the Deadliest Catch before... I don't think that falls into the "trash TV" category I'm talking about... I mean, it's not about titillation and sensationalization. I think there's a big difference. Know what I mean?
29th-Jun-2009 04:39 am (UTC)
Yeah, it's more about honest work and rugged situations.
29th-Jun-2009 04:40 am (UTC)
I seriously would love to go do that for a season... I'm sure the work would be grueling, but what a freaking rush it would be.
29th-Jun-2009 04:49 am (UTC)
Unless you got dropped into the Bering Sea, then that would sort of suck.
29th-Jun-2009 04:50 am (UTC)
Yeah, that would put a damper on the fun aspect, I think. I think I would want to be on Sig's boat... he seemed cool. :-)
29th-Jun-2009 04:52 am (UTC)
Sig seems cool, but he can be a cold-hearted bastard at times. His little brother, Edgar, tends to soften his edges a bit. I like all the boats really. Phil I like a lot because he just doesn't put up with shit. And the Hillstrand brothers just are nut jobs, but damn do they get the work done. I think the only boat I wouldn't like is Keith's, cause he tends to be a tad high strung. But he seems a nice enough fellow.
29th-Jun-2009 04:59 am (UTC)
A cold-hearted bastard? Really? How so?

Which boat is Keith on?
29th-Jun-2009 05:03 am (UTC)
Keith is on the Wizard.

Sig just a hard man to work with, it's fishing first and second. A good man to work for, and honest as the day is long, but he's not there to be your friend, and he's not there to hold your hand. I think he's amazing at what he does, and I do like Sig a lot, but he can just be a cold bastard. Edgar is much easier going, and I think that helps with the crew. That's why I think Sig has Edgar as the deck chief, he doesn't deal as much with the crew.

They call Sig Old Ahab for fun. That should be an indication of his mood sometimes.
29th-Jun-2009 05:05 am (UTC)
Oh wow... when I've seen him, he's always seemed pretty down to earth and while not exactly laid back, at least sort of a goof and kind of funny. lol...

I watched more a couple of seasons ago I think... when that douchebag Blaine was on somebody's boat and was itchin' to be a Captain... total whiner. Do you remember him?
29th-Jun-2009 05:09 am (UTC)
Yeah, I don't remember which season that was. Long ago. Yeah, he's not on any boat now.

Well Sig is down to earth, and he can joke around too. Just he's not like Johnathan Hillstrand, or Keith, who are very buddy, buddy with their crews. Though he sure does like a good prank, or at least a bad Edgar prank. LOL Sig looked the other way when one of his greenhorns made off with Johnathan Hillstrands jacket off of the Time Bandit. *snork* That was last season.
29th-Jun-2009 05:11 am (UTC)
He was such a douche. lol...

Oh, I've seen him pull a couple of pranks. That's some brutal (but super funny) stuff. LOL....

That's pretty ballsy for a greenhorn!
29th-Jun-2009 05:15 am (UTC)
Yeah, it was. Johnathan and Andy got him back though. While the Northwestern was waiting for Sig to come back, the Time Bandit pulled along side and demanded Jake, the green horn. So Edgar let them have him, and Jake took it like a man. He went over to the Time Bandit, took back Johnathan's jacket, then they grabbed him, duck taped him till he couldn't move, then hung him on the hydro-crane and dunked him repeatedly into the ice-cold, January water with Edgar and the Northwestern looking on and laughing. Then the Hillstrands took him out, dried him off, and sent him back to Edgar who only shrugged and said that it was what he deserved.

LOL
29th-Jun-2009 05:17 am (UTC)
Oh dude, that would be freaking hilarious to see. LMAO.... I seriously would have loved to have caught that one. lol...
25th-Jun-2009 05:36 pm (UTC)
I hate, hate, hate reality shows! I refuse to watch them. For some reason, they feel trashy to me. Give me "CSI" or "Criminal Minds" any day. LOL
29th-Jun-2009 04:20 am (UTC)
lol... there's a reason they feel that way to you, missy! :-)
26th-Jun-2009 01:31 am (UTC)
But but but omg omg omg did you hear about Jon and Kate?!!!

Huh? What dying Iranians? DUDE! Jon and Kate are SPLITTING UP!! This is SERIOUS!

*scoff*

The only reality TV show I've ever watched was Survivor back in the first couple of seasons, and I like Amazing Race a lot. But both of those are more like game shows to me (especially Amazing Race).

I tried to watch Big Brother when it first came out... I think I lasted 3 or 4 episodes before finally giving up on caring.
29th-Jun-2009 04:21 am (UTC)
lol.... Exactly. More people are concerned with those two than in what's going on in the world around them. I personally find that really sad, to be honest. You make exactly my point. :-)

26th-Jun-2009 04:56 am (UTC)
Okay, gag bags full. Are So You Think You Can Dance and Top Chef reality shows or talent shows? Just curious, because I do watch those, mostly to marvel at their talent in things I could never do.
29th-Jun-2009 04:24 am (UTC)
My gag bag runneth over. lol...

I personally don't think a show like Top Chef or So You Think... are necessarily the sort of "trash TV" I'm talking about... I mean the people on those shows have talent and skill... they're not necessarily trying to "win" (whatever that means) their respective shows by showing off their racks. And they're not necessarily all about viewers getting some freaky voyeuristic thrill. Those shows aren't about titillation... they have to have some level of talent and skill to be on. I see a big difference personally. Know what I mean?
30th-Jun-2009 05:11 pm (UTC)
Thanks for agreeing with me that my 'reality' shows are more talent type things. I've never watched one of those Survivor, Big Brother or dating type shows, I want my entertainers to have at least SOME talent.
1st-Jul-2009 02:34 am (UTC)
I would seriously prefer a show that wasn't about stupid sensationalism and titillation. Bleh.
2nd-Jul-2009 03:13 pm (UTC)
You're so odd, wanting shows to be about entertainment or education, weirdo.
*sarcasm off*
4th-Jul-2009 02:17 am (UTC)
lol... I know, I'm such a freak.
5th-Jul-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
Silly you!
6th-Jul-2009 05:30 am (UTC)
Indeed. That's me. :-)
2nd-Jul-2009 07:27 am (UTC)
I cringe when I see this stuff :( There is so much wrong with it, its not helping the kids on the show or the ones that watch it. They really do just find the worst parts of society and broadcast it as entertainment. People need to have more shame about different things than they already do lol.

I watch Gordon Ramsay's shows, Iron Chef isn't bad (the American version sucks though lol), even Estate of Panic had cute moments. My favorite reality TV show came on I think even before Survivor, it was called Bootcamp, and it was just what it sounds like. It only lasted one season and I think that's crap, I've never seen a premise I liked more!
4th-Jul-2009 03:20 am (UTC)
Seriously. What passes for entertainment these days is just sad... and you're right, it helps nobody. It's lame.

I've never heard of Bootcamp. What was it about?
10th-Jul-2009 06:47 am (UTC)
Normal people had to pretty much go through simulated bootcamp. One woman broke down in tears and went back home before they even put the uniform on her :P
