What's Up?

I remember when I was younger... okay, up until a few years ago really... that I would get really geeked up about Halloween. It was, and still is, one of my favorite holidays. Honestly, I couldn't tell you why. I love the season... not that you can really differentiate seasons here in Southern California... but I love that it gets darker, that it starts cooling down and isn't so bloody hot all the time. But Halloween has always been fun for me.

Increasingly though, over the last few years, I've seen a real decrease in Halloween enthusiasm. At least around here. Not as many people decorate, hell, few people even bothered carving 'punkins for the big night on my street. And there is a severe shortage of trick-or-treaters. Last year, we had maybe half a dozen. Last night, I kid you not, we had TWO groups of kids come to our door. TWO!!!! A grand total of like 6 or 8 kids in all. I think that I probably would have settled for the high school kids who show up sans costume with nothing but a pillow case in their hand demanding candy. It's sad, sad, sad, I tell you. I've always wanted to have a place big enough to set up a really cool haunted house for the kids and scare the bejeeezus out of them. Because I'm such a big kid, it would seriously be as much fun for me as it would for them. But now that I do have a big enough place, it's like "why bother?" We'll get a couple of kids through and it just doesn't seem worth the effort. It really bums me out. Bleh.

Anyway... so now the sister unit and I are stuck with like 100 pounds of friggin' candy. And being that neither of us really eat candy anymore and I don't think the homeless shelters will take a big bag of candy, it looks like it may well rot.

What a bum out. I hate the fact that some freaks out there who get off on hurting people have killed the Halloween spirit. I can understand why parents don't want their kids roaming the street on Halloween night. But it sucks all the same. But damn...

BRING BACK THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT, DAMMIT!!!!!

Anyway... here are my 'punkins. The sister-unit was highly amused at my carving design choice... not as hard as she laughs when I shave my own head, but she laughed nonetheless. I have to admit that they're not very Halloweeny and that I don't have the mad 'punkin carvin' skeeels I'm afraid. Though, the carving did go much more smoothly once I figured out that a butcher knife, scissors and a steak knife weren't exactly the proper tools to be using and opted for a... get this... 'punkin carving set. Who woulda thunk it? But all in all, I think they turned out okay and I like 'em all the same.
