| So last night was the annual Alfred E. Smith charity dinner. In honor of that, Obama and McCain got off the campaign trail long enough to attend and make some remarks to the crowd. Traditionally, the dinner has been something along the lines of a celebrity roast where speakers take potshots at themselves as well as others and many past presidential candidates have spoken there.
If you haven't caught the speeches given by both Obama and McCain, you should take a little bit and give them a look. They're pretty damn funny. Even McCain. And to be perfectly honest, though some of McCain's humor can be construed as maybe a little mean-spirited... especially when he starts talking about Keith Olbermann, at the end of his speech, I caught a glimpse of that old McCain... the one I used to respect. I thought his comments about Obama were fantastic, seemingly very heartfelt and more importantly, I thought they sounded very sincere. So maybe that old McCain is still lurking around under the layers of Rovian crap that's been plastered on his soul. It'd be nice to see a little more of that from him.
Anyway... on with the show. First up, John McCain...
And now for Obama... he just absolutely killed it...
Of course, the goodwill only lasted as long as the dinner and both candidates were back to slugging it out on the campaign trail today, but at least they were able to come together for a very good cause for at least one night... |
