Well good evening ladies and gents... Just wanted to pop in and say hello and to apologize for my way behindedness. Yikes. I've had a million and four things crop up lately and I just really haven't had much to say as I've been kind of sifting through the garbage in head to see if I could throw some of it away. I'm apparently quite the packrat. Anyway... I plan on getting caught up... or as close to caught up as I can get. Apologies to those folks waiting for emails, they'll be coming soon!
So anyway... on to the question for the evening...
Is John McCain's age a legitimate issue in this campaign?
Some people scream "ageism" if you even bring up the fact that McCain is... ahem... a little long in the tooth. But if somebody is of an age where society has passed them by, might that age then be a liability? For instance, if modern technology... even the most basic trappings of modern technology... are utterly alien to a person, is it not fair to say that person might be out of touch with society? Not to mention the fact that the government is heavily reliant upon those trappings of modern technology, the most obvious example being computers and the internets, and if John McCain is unfamiliar with said technology, doesn't that make him somewhat ill-suited to that office? Doesn't that ignorance make him a liability? I think it does.
Here are a few recent quotes that got me on this train of thinking...
"I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself."
And this from one of his spokespeople...
"He's fully capable of browsing the Internet and checking Web sites."
I obviously can't speak for anybody else, but the fact that McCain is just
now learning to "get online himself" is worrisome to me. In today's ever shrinking world and with that world heavily dependent upon technology, John McCain is only now fully capable of "browsing the internet"? That's something that toddlers can do in this day and age, and I think that's a problem for this country. A big problem.
This isn't to say necessarily that all older people are incapable of using computers and such. Obviously that's not the case. But I think generally speaking, the younger generation is more comfortable using and adapting to modern technology while people of McCain's age tend to struggle with it. Again, that's a broad generality, but one I think holds water. Let's not forget that McCain was born in 1936, loooong before computers had even been thought of and he's obviously not very comfortable using modern technology. And if McCain isn't even competent enough to email somebody, I don't think he's fit for the office of the presidency in modern America. He's obviously way out of touch with our society and with this world. And yes, I think that his age is a huge factor in that. McCain is an abacus in a time of supercomputers and I think that's a liability for this country.
So what do you fine folks think? Is John McCain's age a relevant and legitimate issue in the presidential campaign? Time to sound off...
