3rd-Mar-2007 01:17 am - Of Arabs, Israelis and Bigfoot...
Scrat
After getting home from work tonight, I decided to make dinner for my sister and niece. I knew my sis had had a long week and was probably beat so I thought it would be a nice treat for her. And so I made my alfredo sauce with shrimp and mushrooms over a bed of spinach fetuccini. Yum. After dinner, I settled with a book that I have to write a review on for my Arab/Israeli Conflict Class. The book is called "Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East." I'm sure a lot of people must think that it has to be the driest reading around. But it's actually quite fascinating. To me anyway. But I'm a history geek, so what can I say?

After cramming my noodle with all sorts of information, I wanted to numb the mind a little bit, so I flipped on the television and tuned into a program on Bigfoot and those that are working to validate Bigfoot as a species. In the interest of full disclosure, I do believe in Bigfoot. Why not? I know that there are a lot of skeptics out there, but I personally don't think it's necessarily unreasonable to believe that with so much forest and swampland throughout this country, that perhaps a very elusive creature could be hiding out. Science is discovering new species all the time. What I find most interesting and very compelling is that so many different countries throughout different eras in history have had some myth of a Bigfoot-like creature. In medeival Europe, there are written accounts of encounters with Bigfoot-like creatures deep in the forests. And of course, there are the tales of the Yeti or the Abominable Snowman from China and Nepal. Most provinces in Canada have reported lots of Sasquatch activity. So it's not simply a few loose kooks here in the States reporting something like an alien abduction. Bigfoot is a global phenomenon with thousands of documented sightings.

To cast a skeptical eye on it though, documented sightings are not the same as physical evidence. There has been no body of a Bigfoot found, no hair or blood samples, no stool or any other substantive physical evidence. The closest thing to physical evidence found has been footprints. There are literally thousands of plaster cast footprints, but even those aren't necessarily conclusive proof. I've seen a ton of photographs, but even I have to admit that 99% of those seem to be of a very dubious nature.

I think that one day, Bigfoot will be found... rather, conclusive proof of his existence will be found. But until then, all we have is belief.

So I turn the question over to you all. Bigfoot... fact or fiction? Myth or reality?
